US Withdraws from UN Organizations and Global Institutions

US withdraws from UN organizations after President Donald Trump announced a major policy shift on Wednesday. He said the United States will leave dozens of international bodies and United Nations forums.

Trump stated that these organizations work against US national interests. He said the decision protects American sovereignty and taxpayer money.

The White House released an official memo to explain the move. It said the United States plans to exit 35 non-UN organizations and 31 UN institutions.

The list includes the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This agreement forms the base of the 2015 Paris climate deal.

The United States already skipped the UN’s annual global climate conference last year. It marked the first absence in three decades.

Manish Bapna, head of the Natural Resources Defense Council, warned about the impact, and said the US will become the first country to leave the climate framework if it exits formally.

He explained that all nations stay in the agreement to face climate change together. Manish added that talks also shape global economic policies and future opportunities.

The decision also covers UN Women. This agency supports gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.

The United States will also leave the UN Population Fund. This body works in over 150 countries on family planning, maternal health, and child care.

The US already reduced funding for this agency last year. The memo confirmed that withdrawal means no participation and no financial support.

Trump earlier cut voluntary funding for many UN agencies. He also left the UN Human Rights Council.
His administration stopped funding for UNRWA, which supports Palestinian refugees. It also announced withdrawal from UNESCO.

Plans to exit the World Health Organization and the Paris climate agreement also surfaced earlier.
The White House named more bodies for possible exit. These include the UN Conference on Trade and Development and the UN Peacebuilding Commission.

Officials said these organizations promote ideas that clash with US sovereignty and economic strength. They argued that taxpayer money should serve national priorities.

The statement added that the US will review all global commitments. The review will assess whether participation truly serves national interests.

US withdraws from UN organizations as part of President Trump’s long-standing criticism of multilateral institutions and their role in global governance.
