Trump peace plan worries European allies over Ukraine war

European leaders talk about the Trump peace plan and show conditional support. They say the plan can start talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war. They also say the plan needs more work.

President Donald Trump earlier said that Ukraine has time until Thursday to accept the 28-point peace plan. He believes President Zelenskyy will approve it. But European allies work on another option before the deadline.

At the G20 summit in South Africa, European and Western leaders discussed how to respond. Trump wants Ukraine to accept his peace plan soon.

Diplomatic sources say that France, the UK, and Germany will meet officials from the EU, the US, and Ukraine in Geneva on Sunday. Italy will also send a representative.

The US plan supports some major demands from Russia. Many European countries criticize this. They praise Trump’s effort to end the war. But they feel some conditions are too hard for Ukraine.

Leaders from the EU, Germany, France, the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Italy, Japan, and Norway released a joint statement. They said the first draft has elements needed for a fair and lasting peace. They believe it gives a starting point, but it needs more work.

A day earlier, President Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine must choose between losing dignity and freedom or losing US support. He asked Ukrainians to stay united and said he will never betray his country. His message moved European leaders to act fast.

A German official said the leaders met in a room called “Lion” and tried to show the same strong spirit. They want better terms for Ukraine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine. He said if Ukraine loses the war or breaks apart, Europe will face serious political effects.

He added that there is a chance to end the war, but a good result is still far.

Trump said earlier that winter is near and bloodshed must stop. He warned that if Zelenskyy rejects the plan, the war will continue.

Trump also recalled a tense meeting with Zelenskyy in February. He said he told Zelenskyy clearly that he did not have strong bargaining power.

In the end, the Trump peace plan remains a difficult choice for Ukraine and Europe.
