Supreme Court Orders Eye Checkup for Imran Khan

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the federal government to arrange a full eye checkup for former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The examination must take place before February 16 under the supervision of specialist doctors.

A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, issued the order after reviewing a report presented by Friend of the Court Salman Safdar. The report highlighted concerns about Imran Khan’s health and the facilities provided in jail.

The hearing addressed a separate petition regarding Imran Khan’s health and prison facilities in the Toshakhana case. Chief Justice Afridi emphasized that the former PM’s health is a priority, and the court will intervene if necessary.

Attorney General informed the court that it is the state’s duty to provide proper medical care. The Chief Justice also highlighted the importance of allowing phone calls with Imran Khan’s children.

Salman Safdar’s report stated that Imran Khan appeared distressed due to delayed medical care. It also mentioned issues such as insufficient heating in winter, discomfort during summer, mosquito problems, and a lack of refrigerator facilities. The report noted that Imran Khan has not had a dental checkup for two years and has not received regular blood tests.

The Supreme Court rejected the request to allow family members to be present during the medical examination. However, the court approved providing books if doctors recommend them for reading.

Attorney General confirmed that a specialist medical team will soon visit Adiala Jail to examine Imran Khan’s eyes. The court ordered that he must also be allowed to speak with his children by phone before February 16.

The Supreme Court praised the role of Salman Safdar as Friend of the Court, recognizing his careful handling of the case and confidentiality in reporting.
