Platform Snapchat suspended more than 415,000 accounts in Australia that belonged to users under 16 years old. The company took this step because the new law bans children under 16 from using social media platforms.

Under the new law, Snapchat, Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms must block users under 16. If companies fail to follow the rule, the Australian government can fine them up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.

Australia’s Online Safety Regulator said technology companies have shut down 4.7 million underage accounts so far. Officials called this move a major success in protecting children online.

Snapchat also urged authorities to make age verification mandatory on app stores. The company believes this step can stop underage users from downloading social media apps more effectively.

Experts say the law marks a strong shift toward stricter digital safety rules. Governments now push tech companies to take more responsibility for young users.
