PTI Challenges Punjab Local Government Bill 2025

PTI challenges Punjab Local Government Bill 2025 in the Lahore High Court, calling several clauses unconstitutional. The party plans to request a stay order against sections that it believes violate the Constitution.

According to reports, PTI leaders have already submitted a written complaint against the bill. Copies were sent to the President, Prime Minister, Governor of Punjab, Chief Minister, and other senior officials.

PTI leader Ejaz Shafi said on Sunday that the petition would soon be filed in the Lahore High Court. He confirmed that legal experts had prepared the objections and necessary documents.

The representation, submitted by Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood, Ejaz Shafi, Munir Ahmed, and Mian Shabbir Ismail, argues that several clauses of the bill conflict with Articles 17, 32, and 140-A of the Constitution.

PTI leaders expressed strong opposition to the non-party-based Union Council system, where one vote applies to several seats. They said this approach weakens political parties and transfers power from elected representatives to administrative officers, which undermines local democracy.

They also criticized the central control over financial powers, saying it goes against the principle of local autonomy. Furthermore, they stated that appointing administrators for an indefinite period is unconstitutional.

PTI demanded that the direct election of Union Council chairmen be restored, local governments’ tenure be fixed for five years, a clear election schedule be announced, and strict restrictions be placed on administrators’ powers.

In conclusion, PTI challenges Punjab Local Government Bill 2025 to ensure that local governance remains democratic, transparent, and in line with the Constitution.
