Pakistan Allows Transshipment Containers Outside Ports
Pakistan allows transshipment containers outside ports for the first time. The government made this important policy decision to support maritime trade and reduce shipping costs.
Officials say this step will help Pakistan avoid extra war risk surcharges on cargo ships. It will also improve the country’s shipping and logistics system.
The decision allows containers to stay outside the port area at special off-dock locations. This policy aims to reduce congestion at ports and improve cargo handling.
Off-Dock Facility to Increase Container Capacity
Chairman of the Karachi Port Trust, Admiral (Retired) Shahid Ahmed, shared details in an interview. He said the off-dock facility will create space for up to 50,000 containers.

He also said ships carrying transshipment cargo will arrive and depart from Pakistan twice a week. This regular movement will support regional maritime trade.
Government Orders Relaxation in Container Parking Rules
The Prime Minister has directed authorities to relax rules for off-dock container parking. This step will help shipping companies store containers outside ports more easily.
Officials believe the move will reduce delays and improve cargo management at ports.
Efforts to Remove War Risk Charges
The chairman also said war risk charges should end where there is no conflict. He confirmed that Pakistan’s shipping trade with the United States, Europe, and the Far East continues without disruption.
The government has also asked Pakistan’s High Commissioner in the United Kingdom to contact the insurance market at Lloyd’s of London regarding war risk issues.
Navy Providing Security to Shipping Lines
Authorities say the Pakistan Navy is providing security to international shipping routes in the region. This support helps maintain safe maritime trade for ships visiting Pakistan.
Experts believe the new policy will reduce port congestion, improve logistics efficiency, and strengthen Pakistan’s role in regional trade.
