Pakistan 5G Spectrum Auction: Telecom Operators Warn Risks
Pakistan 5G spectrum auction has come under scrutiny as telecom operators warn the government about economic risks linked to a rushed rollout.
Telecom operators have warned that launching 5G networks in Pakistan without affordable and widely available devices can cause financial damage. They shared these concerns as the government prepares for the 5G spectrum auction.
Operators said early implementation of 5G may lead to a waste of valuable foreign exchange. They explained that investment could shift away from improving basic connectivity and instead move toward costly infrastructure with limited short-term benefits.
They also highlighted that more than ten years have passed since Pakistan held its first 4G auction. Despite this, millions of mobile users still do not have access to the internet.
Industry leaders called this situation a clear warning sign. They described it as a “lesson” that policymakers must consider before moving ahead with the 5G spectrum auction.
Chairman of the Telecom Operators Association of Pakistan, Aamir Ibrahim, urged decision-makers to avoid repeating past mistakes. He stressed the need to focus on coverage, affordability, and digital inclusion before adopting next-generation technology.
Telecom operators stressed that careful planning remains essential to protect the economy and ensure digital inclusion. They reiterated that a phased approach is critical for the success of the Pakistan 5G spectrum auction.
