OIC Rejects Israel’s Move to Recognize Somaliland
The OIC rejects Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland and calls it a clear violation of international law. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation strongly supports Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The OIC held an emergency meeting of foreign ministers in Saudi Arabia on the Somaliland issue. The OIC Secretary General addressed the meeting. He said the organization fully supports Somalia’s unity. He added that Israel’s action against Somaliland breaks global laws.
Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Waleed bin Abdulkarim, also spoke at the meeting. He said Saudi Arabia rejects all efforts that harm Somalia’s sovereignty, and he stated that dialogue can unite Somalia and the region. Foreign minister also stressed the need for the second phase of a Gaza ceasefire.
The Palestinian Foreign Minister shared his views during the session. He said Palestine supports Somalia’s borders as recognized by the United Nations, and called Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland illegal under international law.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister gave a strong response, and said Somalia will not allow any country to use its land. He said any border violation is a violation of sovereignty, and confirmed that so-called Somaliland is an important part of federal Somalia. Somalia’s foreign minister said Israeli claims directly violate Somalia’s independence.
Turkey’s representative also addressed the meeting. He said Israel’s attempt to recognize Somaliland is unacceptable. He said Turkey’s support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty remains firm and clear.
The OIC rejects Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland and urged the global community to respect Somalia’s internationally recognized borders.
