New Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Takes Oath Today

The New Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir will take his oath today, and the ceremony will take place in the President House at 10:30 AM. The Prime Minister will take his oath at 11:30 AM, and Faryal Talpur has reached Muzaffarabad and will attend the ceremony as a special guest.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir formed its first Legislative Assembly in 1971. It was created under the 1970 Act and Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan became the first President of Azad Kashmir.

Parliamentary System Approved By Assembly

After the Interim Constitutional Act of 1974, the Assembly approved the parliamentary system, but the Assembly lasted only two years. In 1977, Martial Law dissolved it, and the first elected Prime Minister, Abdul Hameed Khan, was removed.

In the 1985 elections, Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan became Prime Minister and the first Prime Minister to complete a full five-year term. After him, several leaders served as Prime Minister, including Mumtaz Hussain Rathore, Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan, and Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry.

From 2001 to 2009

From 2001 to 2006, Sardar Sikandar Hayat again held office, and on 24 July 2006, Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan became the seventh Prime Minister. Internal party differences rose because he also kept the party presidency.

On 6 January 2009, the PPP, Peoples Muslim League, and MQM filed a no-confidence motion and removed Sardar Attique Ahmed from office. Sardar Yaqoob became the new Prime Minister.

On 22 October 2009, Muslim Conference united again and removed Sardar Yaqoob and made Farooq Haider the Prime Minister.

From 2010 to 2025

In July 2010, Ch. Aziz filed a no-confidence motion against Farooq Haider and Attique Ahmed Khan nominated himself again. Farooq Haider resigned instead of fighting the motion. On 29 July, Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan again became Prime Minister.

In the 2011 elections, PPP formed the government and Ch. Abdul Majeed became Prime Minister. In July 2016, PML-N won with a two-third majority and Farooq Haider became Prime Minister again.

In the 2021 elections, PTI came to power and Abdul Qayoom Niazi became Prime Minister. On 12 April 2022, PTI itself submitted a no-confidence motion against him and he resigned.

On 18 April, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas became Prime Minister, but the opposition boycotted the election. The High Court disqualified him in a contempt case on 11 April 2023 and on 20 April, Ch. Anwar-ul-Haq became Prime Minister without opposition, as no one submitted papers against him.

On 14 November 2025, PPP filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq and on 17 April, voting took place in the Assembly. PPP’s candidate, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, secured 36 votes. He became the 16th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Today, the New Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir will officially take his oath and begin his duties.
