Nargis Mohammadi Prison Sentence to 7.5 Years in Iran Jail

Iran has given Nargis Mohammadi prison sentence of seven and a half years. Authorities announced the decision in Tehran. International media reported the development.

The Nargis Foundation said officials punished her for decades of work for women’s rights.

Mohammadi, 53, recently ended a one-week hunger strike on Sunday. She informed her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, about the new sentence during a short phone call from prison.

The foundation said authorities kept her in solitary confinement for weeks. They also cut her off from communication. She managed to share details of her situation in a brief call with her lawyer.

The court gave her six years in jail on charges of assembly and conspiracy against national security. The court added one and a half years for alleged propaganda against the government. Officials also ordered two years of internal exile in the city of Khosf. They imposed a two-year travel ban as well.

Authorities arrested Mohammadi on 12 December. She had criticized the suspicious death of lawyer Khosro Ali Kordi. Prosecutor Hassan Hematfar said she made provocative remarks at a memorial event in Mashhad. He claimed she encouraged slogans and disorder.

Foreign media said authorities are holding her in a prison in Mashhad. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. She had already faced imprisonment at that time for her activism for women’s rights and her campaign to end the death penalty in Iran.

Human rights supporters continue to raise concern over the Nargis Mohammadi prison sentence and her treatment in custody.
