Indus Waters Treaty Full and Fair Implementation: PM
Indus Waters Treaty must see full and fair implementation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday.
He shared his message on World Wetlands Day: and said water resources remain essential for national, environmental, and social well-being.
Shehbaz Sharif said this day gives Pakistan and the world a chance to renew their promise. Countries must protect wetlands for long-term use and better management. He added that protecting water resources is not only an environmental duty but it also ensures social welfare at both individual and collective levels.
Pakistan Respect Global Laws
The prime minister said Pakistan respects global laws. The country believes in the complete and fair implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. He rejected any attempt to use water as a weapon; and called such actions a serious violation of international law.

PM said this year the day carries the theme, “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Preserving Cultural Heritage.” He said the theme reminds people of the cultural value of wetlands and their importance.
Shehbaz Sharif added that Pakistan is a member of the 1971 Ramsar Convention on wetlands. The treaty highlights the wise use of wetlands and the protection of their resources for humanity. Countries mark this day to remember that agreement.
Serious Environmental Challenges
Shehbaz Sharif said reliable wetlands help countries face serious environmental and economic challenges. They reduce the risks of droughts, floods, and extreme climate change.
He said Pakistan’s wetlands include lakes, glaciers, inland water bodies, coastal areas, and mangrove systems. These areas support biodiversity, climate protection, and effective water management.
He said millions of Pakistanis depend on wetlands for their livelihoods and daily life, and warned that the loss of wetlands can reduce jobs, raise food prices, and increase the risks of floods and drought.
The prime minister urged people to renew their commitment. He asked citizens to treat wetlands as a valuable national, environmental, social, and cultural asset, and called for strong efforts at both personal and collective levels to protect them.
PM said Pakistan will continue to raise its voice globally. The country will promote fair, legal, and peaceful use of water resources among nations under the Indus Waters Treaty.
