Indian Police Release Statement on Sydney Attacker’s Family

Indian police release statement after the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Police said the attacker’s family in India had no knowledge of any extremist thinking or violent plans.

Indian police confirmed that the attacker belonged to Hyderabad, a city in South India. He completed a commerce degree before leaving India in 1998. He moved to Australia in search of work.

Police said the attacker married a woman of European origin in Australia. The couple had one son and one daughter. Authorities described the family life as normal.

According to Reuters, the attack took place during a Jewish Hanukkah event. The shooting killed 15 people. Officials called it the worst mass shooting in Australia in nearly 30 years. Police are investigating the incident from a terrorism angle.

Indian police stated that the attacker had no criminal or negative record before leaving India. The family remained unaware of any extremist activities. Police also ruled out any local influence from India or Telangana in the radicalization of the father and son.

A Reuters team visited the family home in Hyderabad’s Toli Chowk area. The house remained locked. No family members were present at the time of the visit.

Neighbors described the area as peaceful. They said the family never came under police attention. One neighbor said the attacker’s brother works as a doctor, and their mother also lives in the same house.

Australian police confirmed that the attacker and his 24-year-old son traveled to the Philippines last month. The father used an Indian passport, while the son traveled on an Australian passport. Authorities are still investigating the purpose of the visit.

Officials said they have not found any confirmed links to terrorist organizations so far. They also found no evidence of terror training during the trip.
