Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Dies at 80

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia dies at the age of 80 after a long illness, according to her party officials.

Khaleda Zia served as Bangladesh’s first female prime minister. She also led the opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Party leaders confirmed her death on Tuesday.

Reports said she suffered from a serious liver disease. Doctors admitted her to the hospital for a long time. On Monday, doctors described her condition as critical.

Bangladeshi media quoted Dr Zia-ul-Haq, a member of the medical board treating her. He said doctors placed Khaleda Zia on life support. Medical staff also carried out regular dialysis.

He explained that her condition worsened whenever doctors stopped dialysis, and her old age and multiple serious illnesses made treatment very difficult.
