Cricket Australia confirmed that the first day crowd beat the previous record from the 2015 World Cup final. That final also took place at the MCG.
According to official figures, 93,442 fans watched the match on day one. In comparison, 93,013 fans attended the 2015 World Cup final.

On the field, Australia struggled in the first innings. The team got all out for 152 runs.
England replied but failed to take control. The entire English team collapsed for 110 runs.
